Types of Scaffolding and Their specifications

22 Jan 2025

Scaffolding is essential for a safe working environment. It is difficult to choose the right scaffolding for each construction project. However, like formwork, there are many different types of scaffolds, and it may seem challenging to know which to choose. Scaffolding is a temporary structure that acts as a platform for the worker to reach heights during the construction. It is required to change depending on the structure and requirements of the project.

Scaffolding Types

1.Brick layer scaffolding : Brick layer scaffolding or single scaffolding is a basic scaffolding system with a single framework of standards, leaders and putlogs connected together. This type of scaffolding is primarily used in  brick masonry. It is low cost and simple construction on the other hand it has limited stability and is not suitable for heavy loads and highest raising works.

2.Mason's Scaffolding: Manson's Scaffolding or Double scaffolding A double row of standards is used for enhanced stability since putlogs cannot penetrate stone walls. This type of scaffolding is very popular for stone masonry works. And so, it provides better support for construction works as compared to single scaffolding.

3.Shoring scaffolding:Temporary structure used to support unstable wall or building during repair works. This structure with the formwork holds the liquid concrete until it cures into a solid that can support itself and save from collapse. This scaffolding is not reusable as it is designed for specific projects.

4.Cantilever scaffolding: Another name for  this type of scaffolding is  “Needle scaffold” , because, the ‘needle’ supports the entire scaffold structure. This scaffolding is used when the ground is unavailable or impartial like busy streets. This types scaffolding allows to work in constrained areas and it requires skilled construction.

5.Steel scaffolding: One of the most popular designs on the market, steel scaffolding is created using steel tubes set by fittings or couplers. This type is suitable for large-scale construction, high-rise buildings, and heavy loads. And also are strong, durable, fire-resistant, and easy to erect.

6.Suspended scaffolding:To work  at high levels , sometimes, it is more convenient and economical to suspend the working platform from above the ground.Commonly used for exterior building maintenance, such as painting or window cleaning. This type of scaffolding are adjustable and easy to use.

7.Tube and clamb scaffolding: This is one of the oldest  types of steel scaffolding and can also be called Tubular scaffolding . It consist of  two parts, tubes and clips or couplers. This type of scaffolding is very popular, because of the ease in assembly and disassembly and high load bearing capacity.

8.Trestel Scaffolding: This scaffolding, support  the working platform on movable tripods or ladders. This type of  scaffolding is useful for light work and it is usually portable.Primarily used for indoor tasks such as painting or repairing ceilings.

9.Kwikstage Scaffolding: A popular choice in commercial construction, kwikstage scaffolding provides a safer and more robust platform to work on. Kwikstage uses galvanisation in the manufacturing process, creating a more durable platform that protects against the elements on an outdoor site. These scaffolding requires initial investment in prefabricated parts.

10.Staircase tower: The patented scaffold also uses steel but is ready-made. Once bought, they are ready for immediate use.Workers can carry tools and equipment with them up the stairs, which is safer than carrying them up a ladder.

11.Mast climbing scaffolding: A mast climbing scaffolding is similar to the suspended scaffolding . But, not hanged from wires. Here, the scaffold can climb up and down Types of Scaffolding and Their specificationson a  fixed mast structure that is fixed on the ground. The setup means mast scaffolding is great on sites with little ground space. Support under the working platform allows it to hold heavier loads than its cable counterpart.

Conclusion

Scaffolding plays a critical role in ensuring safety, efficiency, and accessibility during construction, maintenance, and repair. By understanding the unique characteristics and applications of different scaffolding systems, construction professionals can make informed decisions that increase productivity while maintaining high safety standards. As construction technologies evolve, scaffolding continues to innovate, supporting structures and advancing across industries.
