Does scaffolding design and calculation be required for all scaffoldings ?

20 Aug 2024

Scaffolding Design and Calculation: Why Is It Necessary? To be more professional and ensure safety, scaffold design and load calculations are always recommended for all scaffold arrangements. This holds true regardless of the size of the scaffold or the nature of the work to be completed.

Unique Workplace Requirements:

Scaffold design should be unique to the workplace and appropriate for the specific job. A one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t suffice; each scaffold must be tailored to its context.

General Requirements for Scaffolds:

1. Capacity: Every scaffold and scaffold component must support its own weight and at least four times the maximum intended load applied or transmitted to it.

2. Qualified Design: A qualified person should design the scaffolds, ensuring they are loaded in accordance with that design.

3. Fall Protection: Regardless of the scaffold type, fall protection is crucial. Employers must provide appropriate fall protection systems based on the specific scaffold being used.

4. Access Requirements: Proper access to scaffolds is essential. Consider the types of access (such as ladders or stairs) and ensure safe entry and exit.

5. Falling Object Protection: Standards also address protections from overhead falling objects.

6. Bespoke Designs: For unique situations, a qualified engineer or designer should create custom scaffold designs.

7. Standard Solutions: Even for standard solutions (such as those provided by industry guidelines like NASC TG20:13), design calculations are essential. These standard solutions are backed by analysis and ensure safety.
